One of our fave Aussie blogger/instagrammers Naomi Kent’s wedding has been approaching for months, it’s been so inspiring watch her instagram feed full of wedding/hens inspired imagery… She’s been generous enough to share the pics of her Festival inspired Hen’s night (or bachelorette party) with us, not just because she (and a few of her best-girls) are dressed in Spell, but because I pestered her to send me the pics ; )
Now, I’ll admit, as a blushing bride-to-be myself (albeit it being a 5 year engagement – so far…) the Bachelorette party is something that has always chilled me to the bone. I picture drunk women, polyester veils adorned with plastic penises, strippers, and generally every nightmarish stereotype that is everything I’m not. But lucky for me, in my lifetime I’ve been to plenty of classy, gorgeous, love-filled Hens that are nothing like that at all – and Naomi’s was no exception. Under the one brief instruction from Naomi, ‘a Festival themed Bachelorette party‘ her bridesmaids pulled together the ‘Festival of Nay’ – a gorgeous sisterly-love-filled night full of Woodstock-inspired teepees, face-painting, festival lanyards, bohemian inspired decorations, fringing, 70s bells, floral headcrowns and with those darling slushie machines am sure there was a bit of booze too ;)…Love it!
Now… um… back to organising my own wedding… eeeek.
looks like a well organised hens night. I thought it was an actual festival at first..
best of luck preparing and fixing for your own wedding.
Congrats to the glowing bride-to-be! This is ingenious! What a warm, fun, magical event! Thanks for sharing.
this is so cool! I love her idea and everything looks so beautiful! Congrats to Naomi for the absolutely magic looking party and the wedding!
Hi guys! Please read this article on Native American headdresses and the problems behind the imagery that you are promoting in this blog post: http://nativeappropriations.com/2010/04/but-why-cant-i-wear-a-hipster-headdress.html
As an Indigenous person, this is very problematic for me and is a direct appropriation of my own culture. Reading the article suggest by jessicametcalfe: http://nativeappropriations.com/2010/04/but-why-cant-i-wear-a-hipster-headdress.html
Wow, what beautiful art! I liked it to a point. Honestly i was a bit stunned at all the “native” imagery/appropriation. While it may not affect you directly, there are detrimental consequences to other people at large. Let’s get on the same team! I can see you have a type of interest in these native cultures. You can still turn this around; such as taking the space to educate yourself and integrate the message your imagery sends to the world. That would be a very monumental step! #courage #humility #redface
Your ignorance is PAINFULLY obvious. Take the headdresses off, burn the teepee, and learn what an arrow shirt is. You want to play pretty with native culture? Go hang out on a rez.(If they let you stay.)
How about being a good ally and helping indigenous people. Plenty of elders need donations to HEAT their homes during the winter.
Maybe look into the real statistics of what you view as exotic and pretty. Like the fact that native women are three times more likely to be raped during their lives by non natives.
You didn’t think about that though, did you? It’s only fashion isn’t it? No, it is not. It is the theft of an already devestated peoples, nations, that for the sake of asthetics you took.
Open your eyes. People are tired and not just native communities.
Quit taking.
Quit being Wasicu.
So you guys are in Australia , how would the People who’s land you are on feel if you dressed like them too. would they be honored, maybe the few remaning Tasmanian People which we’re decimated by genocide would they too be honored and feel justified by you mascarading as them ?
Honestly i do not know where to begin when it comes to pointing out Your lack of knowledge, history sensitivity, common sense.. let me just say this that Indigenous People are human beings just like Europeans and worthy of respect and dignity, Our Peoples are not subjects of Colonial rule to entertain the masters of decadence and white priviledge.
WE ARE NO LONGER YOUR MASCOTS,NOW MOVE ON!
To stereotype thus generalize is to Dehumanize, Don’t do US like that!

geeez it’s a gypsy, hippie, spiritual, bohemian or however you want to call it trend/life style/look….i am sure no one meant to offend anyone :).are the gypsies attacking the gypsy trend and the people who decorate their homes in that style?well i don’t know.native american is a very in style as well.what’s wrong with that?it’s like some of the african american people still cling to that all whites are racists.hey i am white, german in fact yet i was married to an african american man….let’s embrace every culture and spread love :).and isn’t it said that the things we dislike in others are what we really dislike about ourself?or that others are a mirror of ourself showing us the part we need to love.have a happy day !!!
Very creative for Hens Party ideas. Look affordable and nice!
